Award-Winning Hospitality: How I Earned Manager of the Second Quarter πŸ’›✨

Cassandra Arnold
Manager of the Quarter Award

Savannah is called The Hostess City of the South for a reason — and for me, it’s more than a nickname. It’s a calling. This August, I was honored to be named Manager of the Second Quarter at the historic River Street Inn, a recognition that celebrates not only my leadership but my unwavering belief that hospitality is the art of making people feel seen, valued, and cared for.

From the front desk to behind-the-scenes moments, every decision I make is guided by the values that have shaped my career and my brand: Hospitality. Empathy. Attentiveness. Respect. Trustworthiness. These aren’t just words — they’re the H.E.A.R.T. of my service philosophy and the reason this award means so much to me.

The Journey to This Moment

The past quarter has been filled with moments that tested my creativity, empathy, and leadership — from turning service challenges into guest smiles, to ensuring first-time visitors feel instantly at home, to welcoming back familiar faces with warmth and recognition.

During the luncheon, the recognition slide behind my name said things like:

  • “Quickly becoming the face of the hotel.”

  • “Kind. Caring. Passionate.”

  • “Goes above and beyond to resolve guest concerns.”

Reading those words out loud felt like confirmation that staying committed to people-first leadership always pays off.

Why This Win Matters for My Brand

For The Etiquette Evangelist, this award is more than a personal accomplishment. It’s a brand pillar that proves my work in luxury hospitality isn’t just about knowledge — it’s about real-world results and recognition.

It gives me:

  • Credibility – My expertise is now backed by an industry award.

  • Visibility – A moment to share my story and values with a wider audience.

  • Momentum – A perfect launchpad for upcoming products, workshops, and speaking engagements.

Looking Ahead

With this recognition fueling my next steps, I’m excited to:

  • Finalize my Whispers of Wisdom™ phrasebook for hospitality pros and guests.

  • Expand my guest service training programs both at River Street Inn and citywide.

  • Share more stories through Sandy Sees Savannah — my blog celebrating the intersection of etiquette, hospitality, and local culture.

My Gratitude Runs Deep

To my River Street Inn colleagues — thank you for walking this journey with me. To our guests — thank you for letting me be part of your Savannah story. And to my readers and Refined Rebels — thank you for reminding me that our shared values matter.

This win isn’t the end of a chapter. It’s the beginning of a bigger, bolder story. And I can’t wait for you to be part of it. 🀎

B. Matthews Eatery – Sunday Brunch with Southern Soul and a Side of Grace πŸ‡

There’s something timeless about B. Matthews Eatery. Nestled on the corner of Bay Street and Habersham, this charming spot invites you to slow down, sip something cool, and savor a slice of Savannah’s soulful culinary scene. As your Etiquette Evangelist and Sunday brunch enthusiast, I knew this would be the perfect place to let grace and grits collide.

The staff embodied that relaxed but attentive Southern hospitality from the moment I arrived. I was greeted with a warm smile and seated quickly, even amid the weekend brunch buzz. It’s the kind of welcome that says, “You belong here,” and sets the tone for a gracious dining experience.

Exposed brick, warm wood tones, and golden morning light gave the space a cozy yet classic feel. The room buzzed with conversation but still allowed space for peaceful moments. With views of the historic district just steps away, it’s the kind of setting that invites reflection and connection, perfect for solo diners or groups alike.

Now let’s talk about what brought me in—brunch.

Starter: I sipped on a mimosa, which sparkled like sunshine in a glass—crisp bubbles dancing through golden citrus, with just enough zest to awaken your taste buds. Light, floral, and effervescent, it’s the sip of Southern brunch sophistication.

Main Course: I ordered the Classic Breakfast, two eggs, any style, you choice of meat - bacon, sausage, or homemade turkey maple apple sausage, and a homemade buttermilk biscuit that added the perfect balance of comfort and richness. I also ordered the extra home fries. These homefries were golden on the outside with just the right amount of crisp, they gave a satisfying crunch at first bite, followed by a soft, pillowy center that melts in your mouth. Each cube was pan-seared to perfection, with edges slightly caramelized for a hint of smoky depth. My breakfast arrived well-plated, and the first bite -- a celebration of bold Southern flavor.

My server checked in just enough—attentive but never intrusive.

Final Thoughts:

Would I return? Without hesitation. B. Matthews embodies the essence of Savannah: rooted in history, refined in hospitality.

πŸ“±✨ Digital Hospitality: Phone & Tablet Etiquette at the Table

The glow of a screen can be comforting, distracting, or downright rude—depending on how and when it’s used. As someone who lives and breathes hospitality, I’ve seen how tech at the table can change everything: the energy, the engagement, and the elegance of a moment.

Let’s explore how to balance connection and courtesy so that every shared space—whether in a five-star dining room or a boutique hotel breakfast nook—feels as gracious as it looks. 🍽️πŸ’‘

🍷 Why Digital Etiquette Matters in Hospitality

Whether you're dining with loved ones, hosting a client lunch, or savoring a solo moment at a sunny sidewalk cafΓ©, glowing screens can disrupt the ambiance.

For guests, phones may signal disinterest.
For staff, it creates an awkward dance of timing and attention.
For hosts, it feels like competing for eye contact.

✨ True digital hospitality is about presence. It says, “This moment matters.”

πŸ“– Table Etiquette for the Digital Age

Let’s explore a few Refined Rebel rules for managing your devices with grace:

1. No Phones on the Table, Please

Treat your phone like a sunhat at supper—tuck it away. πŸ“΅
If you're expecting a call, say so upfront with poise:

“I may need to step away briefly—thank you for understanding.”

2. Ask Before You Snap

Food photos are part of the fun—but check the room first.

Dining with others? “Mind if I grab a quick photo before we dive in?” πŸ΄πŸ“Έ
Dining solo? Snap, savor, and silence.

3. Silence is Still Golden

Always silence your device before the bread basket lands.
Buzzes, beeps, and flashes are the new clinking cutlery—and not in a good way.

4. Excuse Yourself for Calls

If you must take a call:

  • Step away from the table

  • Keep it short

  • Rejoin with warmth and grace

πŸ’¬ Try: “Excuse me—I’ll be just a moment.”

5. Hospitality Staff Tip: The Graceful Pause

When a guest is mid-scroll or mid-call, pause a step away and make soft eye contact.
Say warmly:

“Whenever you’re ready, I’ll be happy to assist.”
Respect meets readiness—every time.

πŸ’Ό For Business Dining: Lead with Polished Tech Use

If you're hosting a professional meal, model the etiquette you want to see.
Keep devices out of sight and give your full attention. That’s leadership through presence.

πŸ“Œ Refined Rebels lead by example—quietly, confidently, and with class.

πŸ«– Dining Alone? Be Digitally Mindful

Yes, you can scroll or read while solo—but don’t disappear.
Take a few moments to breathe, smile, and enjoy your surroundings.
Your presence is still a form of hospitality—to yourself and to those who serve you.

🌟 Final Thought: Presence is the Ultimate Luxury

The most unforgettable meals don’t begin with food—they begin with focus.
Being present says, “You matter.”
And that, my friends, is always on trend.

Whether you’re serving, hosting, or simply sitting down to enjoy a moment—digital grace sets the tone for something truly special.

🧁 Let’s Talk Tech Etiquette!

What’s your biggest digital etiquette pet peeve?
Have you ever had to gently remind someone to put their phone away?
Drop your thoughts in the comments or share this post with your digital-savvy (or not-so-savvy πŸ˜…) friends.
